My previous post discussed a number of hints and tips and showed a complete example of how to do this. For our next app, a large part of the screenshot setup requires selecting effect presets from a collection view, and scrolling the collection view to the correct location.

This is made particularly difficult since each device has a different sizes for the collection views and different sizes for the cells within them.

I usually include the section and item in the accessibilityIdentifier for the cell i. If you wanted to make sure that the cell is fully visible for a screenshot for exampleyou would use:. This lets you query the collectionView cells to see if the identifier is present without having the test fail by directly checking for the cell with collectionViewElement.

You can view your photos in a nice grid view:. You can even transition between the two layouts with a cool pinch gesture. UICollectionView makes adding your own custom layouts and layout transitions like those in the Photos app simple to build.

You can use them to make circle layouts, cover-flow style layouts, Pulse news style layouts — almost anything you can dream up! Using them is very similar to the table view data source and delegate pattern. First, take a look at the example of the finished project.

UICollectionView contains several key components, as you can see below:. In addition to the visual components described above, a collection view has a layout object which is responsible for the size, position and several other attributes of the content. Layouts can be swapped out during runtime, and the collection view can even automatically animate switching from one layout to another! Elements lay out one after another based on their size, quite like a grid view. You can use this layout class out of the box, or subclass it to get some interesting behavior and visual effects.

You will learn more about these elements in-depth throughout this tutorial. It will allow you to search for a term on the popular photo sharing site Flickr, and it will download and display any matching photos in a grid view, as you saw in the screenshot above. Conversely, a horizontal flow layout places items from top to bottom across the left edge of the view until it reaches the bottom edge. Select the single cell in the collection view and set the Reuse Identifier to FlickrCell using the Attributes inspector.UICollection View takes the familiar patterns of UITable View and generalizes them to make any layout possible and, in many cases, trivial.

Items are managed by a data sourcewhich provides a representative cell view at a particular index path. Instead, a collection view has a layout object, which determines the position of each subview, similar to a data source in some respects. More on that later. In another departure from the old-school table view way of doing things, the process of recycling views has been significantly improved.

UICollection View thankfully does away with this. Simply register a UICollection Reusable View subclass for a particular reuse identifier, and everything will work automatically.

So in its place, collection views have supplementary viewswhich can be associated with each cell. As such, headers and footers are just the beginning of what can be done with supplementary views.

The whole point is that with supplementary views, even the most complex layout can be accomplished without compromising the semantic integrity of cells. UITable View hacks are to spacer.

In addition to cell views and supplementary views, collections also have decoration views. A decoration view, as the name implies, is something that without a functional purpose… other than to perhaps spurn the hatred of anti-skeuomorphic zealots across the interwebs.

One thing to remember about decoration views is that they are entirely managed by the layout, unlike cell or supplementary views, which are under the jurisdiction of the collection view data source.

Layouts are at the heart of what makes UICollection View so magical. UICollection View Layout is an abstract base class for positioning cell views and their supplementary and decoration views. Each cell view, supplemental view, and decoration view have layout attributes. To get an idea of how flexible layouts are, look no further than the properties of an UICollection View Layout Attributes object:.

Using this, you could, for example, fade out items as they approach the edge of the screen. In fact, collection views can even swap out layouts wholesale, allowing views to transition seamlessly between different modes—all without changing the underlying data. It is sized in such a way that I see only one cell at a time. I have disabled vertical scrolling so only horizontal scrolling takes place. Everything works just peachy where I scroll horizontally across cells. The disadvantage of this scrolling is I can scroll and get to a position where I see half portion of two cells with a gap in between.

What I want to achieve is to show only one cell at a time and never show two half cells. So the scrolling should take me to the next cell one at a time. When using the later method, you would typically do the following:.
